Where we work

Where we work

NLR Mozambique works in Zambezia, Nampula and Niassa Provinces, in the high endemic districts.

New Patients

Each year there are more than a thousand new leprosy patients detected in Mozambique. Especially many cases in the northern provinces of Cabo Delgado and Nampula and Zambézia in the central region. The selection process follows the criteria: Detection Rate more than 5 cases per 100.00 inhabitants for 3 consecutive years. In Niassa province, no particular district meets all criteria. However, without NLR, no specialized organisation would be present in Niassa. NLR will keep a low-profile presence.

The approximately 2,500 health volunteers play an important role in the performance of the leprosy work: they find nearly 60% of all new leprosy patients! Through 125 self-care groups we help former leprosy patients to care for their numb hands and feet, so that further handicaps can be prevented.
