With 23 years old, Argentina Elias lives in Sassamanja Village, located in Mocuba District in Zambezia, is married and has two boys. Affected by konzo since 2012, she joined to the Sassamanje SCG in the same year, after diagnose.

“I knew about the disease when I participated in the SCG session, where that day the nurse was talking about konzo. After sensitization, I was observed and the nurse confirmed that I had konzo. At that time I had many difficult to walk.

“My daughter used to walk with the support of two bamboo sticks. Her life was very difficult. She was not able to do her house activities and with my age, i had to help her in taking care and carrying her children”, said Margarida Almoço, Argentina’s mother.

I was informed that with physiotherapy intervention I could improve, but “because Mocuba hospital is 30 kilometres from my village, I had never go to any session and this reduced a lot my hope of one day get better.”

After the construction of the CBR center Argentina started to practice physiotherapy with the support of a trained community volunteer.

“My daughter started to participate in the rehabilitation sessions in the group. Some months after, I saw her situation getting better and at that time she was able to carry out some activities at home and she was able to walk with the support of only one crunch. She continued practicing until she has stopped to use the Canadian crunches”. The group that she is part has helped a lot and is still helping many other people.

I beg the technicians as well as local persons whom a doing this good work to not abandon us and also continue involving more people in order to reduce or even end health problems in our community. To my fellow group partners, a appeal for not give up of the group, because if we continue here more people will came and get support. Thank you for helping us, finalized Argentina.
